Welcome to the Eden Sport and Game Fishing Club Website

Fishing Report                                                                                               Dated: 22/03/2012

It has been very quiet on the fishing front this week.  Last Saturday was unfishable.  On Sunday a couple of boats braved the conditions but found it very rough and rather uncomfortable and there were no reported catches.  One boat Unwind, believed to be a Tathra boat, was heard on the radio to have found a patch of small Yellowfin just North of Tura Beach.

Observations made by several fishermen over the last week or two is that there is no bait.  Local boat Nevahome travelled up and down our fishing grounds on Sunday reporting they had not seen any bait all day and fisherman Brian_S who was fishing with friends at Bermagui today, said that there were some signs of activity with birds and seals etc. but the bait remained deep never coming to the surface.

Nevahome also reported that the current has been pushing down from the north keeping water temperatures at about 21.5° locally, with the water a nice clear blue.  Kingfish were biting well on Sunday and Monday and there was a reported sighting of a Marlin in 30 fathoms of water at Disaster Bay.

With the Eden Game Fishing Tournament a little over a week away, a change in the weather and/or water conditions is what is needed.

Dated: 15/03/2012

There have been quite a few disappointments for many fishermen in the last week.  Despite the number of Marlin in our waters at present there have been very few recorded captures or tags.  Andrew_C  dropped 2, Dave_I skipper of Sea Tiger dropped 1, Merimbula boat Spooky dropped 1, charter boat Reel Affair dropped 2 and local boat Shockwave fishing out of Batemans Bay tagged 1 from 4 hookups.  In addition, what was believed to be a Short Billed Spearfish was dropped by the guys fishing on Iceman on monday.  Better luck next time guys.

On a brighter note, Rob_M fishing on Seahog landed a 40kg Yellowfin on Saturday morning.  On Sunday the Kingfish were on the bite at Mowarry and a number of small Yellowfin up to 15kg were tagged or caught.  Also on Sunday Chris_D from Polaris brought home a 65kg Broadbill hooked on the bottom while fishing deep for BlueEye.

Water temperatures at the beginning of the week were around 21° with patches of 22° to be found here and there.

Member Story

Hi Guys,

Something you may want to add to the fishing news.

Had a chance to take out some friends from Canberra on Sunday 11th for their first time out on the blue water. We travelled out to the Eden FAD in as good a conditions as we have had for a few weeks. Trolled around the FAD 1/2 a dozen times. Nothing. Continued due east straight to the shelf. Found a temperature break. The water was 22.4 and dropped to 21.2 degrees. The Yellow Fin were holding up near the edge of this cooler water. We had our first hook up almost immediately on the 10kg gear which had a 6" jet head skirt. One of the friends stood up and took control of the rod. Unfortunately he dropped it. We reset the gear and went again hooking up with in minutes on the 30 trolling a Black Magic Super Stripey in Super Lumo color. This time the fish was boated and weighed in at 15kg. We reset the gear again and this time put another angler on to a fish, unfortunately this was also dropped by not keeping enough tension on the line. It spooked the school and pushed them deep. We didn't have another strike the rest of the day.

There were plenty of seals around. Birds flying around but not diving. The fish were in a school of small squid. The fish boated however spat out 2 small pillies when on the deck and later when cleaned had a few more small pillies in its stomach. Surprisingly no squid though.

The smile on the faces of my friends was magic. I put some of the fish on the BBQ last night for them for dinner. The whole conversation of the evening was they couldn't get over how hard the fish pull by comparison to Cod, Yellow Belly and Trout. As I said to them, there is no comparison. By the end of the night I think I could see them going out and buying a boat when they get back Canberra. Even the wife of one of the guys suggested it would be good to have a boat.

Regards,

Brian
